From Seed to Song: A History of Growth

2023

Agroecology and Regenerative Land Use
  • 100 locust tree pilot for pollinators, nitrogen, and multiple harvests
  • Cover-cropped 23 acres with soil-enriching crops
  • Increased to 7 honeybee colonies
  • Piloted garden/livestock land plots for community members
  • Prepared soil for a 1-acre hemp production collaboration
  • Expanded orchard to produce bulk quantities of berries
  • Grew over 1,000 trees and shrubs in nurseries
  • Kept four varieties of livestock for educational use year-round
Healthy Farm Food and Experiences for All
  • Farm and nature afterschool program now offered every school day, with transportation from Kingston schools
  • 25% of campers attended on Low-Income & Immigrant Camper Scholarships made possible through grassroots fundraising
  • Offered After School Program and transport to local youth service organizations
  • Continued popular adult workshops (e.g., growing mushrooms)
  • Renewed field trips for school and community groups suspended during COVID
Infrastructure Development
  • Increased greenhouse space for event and educational programming
  • Dedicated separate greenhouse and equipment area for farm use
  • Purchased new farm equipment: high-horsepower tractor, forklift, precision seeder, and maple sugaring evaporator
  • Added hot water shower, Wi-Fi, and fire pit to staff living area
Cultural Development
  • Continued a 10-year tradition of providing space for Native American programs, including planting of heritage seeds, education, and ceremonies
  • Evolved local arts culture surrounding "Reverence for the Land" through new original songs, skits, works of art, multicultural events, and roots music performances
Organizational Development
  • Formed strong new partnerships with two immigrant service organizations

Throughout the uncertainty of this year, we were still able to hold space for ALL members of the community, regardless of income, to embrace healthy foods, agriculture, and natural experiences...and we could not have done it without you! 

2019

  • sponsored summer camp for children from migrant & low-income families
  • dedicated acreage to indigenous traditional crops and educational uses
  • stepped up boldly to protect the land in our region
  • started a Community Tree Nursery with now 250 saplings
  • launched 3 new festivals: Maple Moon, Earth Day, & Voices of the Earth
  • started an inclusive Farm & Nature afterschool program
  • offered discounted CSA shares
  • offered maple sugaring programs throughout the area for free
  • donated healthy farm products to community events and food pantries
  • collaborated to add a Community Day to Brassroots Festival
